Dan Sung Sa:

When it gets late in Los Angeles the food options are pretty much taco trucks. Coming fromm New York this has been a weird pill to swallow. I love tacos but sometimes you want to sit down and have a waiter. Well Koreatown is the answer. For some reason Koreatown is a self governed part of Los Angeles. I don’t know why or how, but I like I know I like it.

We chose to go to Dan Sung Sa . With Heron in town it was important to me that he see some other sides of this city. It was my second time being there. The first time a guy was slumped over a garbage can by the bathroom puking. This visit was more tame.

Dan Sung Sa is kind of like an American sports bar minus the sports. The menu is mostly fried food that is written in broken English with no prices. The key is to order what you think you might like and see how it turns out.

Soup: They start you with a bowl of soup that is basically some broth and green onions. It is a murky reddish brown and doesn’t taste like much but spice. I would pass on this if I had the opportunity again.

Pork Rips(so said the menu): I wasn’t sure if we were getting ribs or lips when I ordered this. Even after my first few bites I didn’t know which one it was. The meat was off the bone and very fatty. I kept my suspicions to myself so as not to stop anyone from eating. Halfway through the dish I found a bone. From that point on I enjoyed the dish.

Kimchi with Pork: I just started eating kimchi this year. I had a self imposed ban on the stuff since I made it for extra credit in sophomore year of high school. My teacher asked me to eat it to complete the credit and I walked out. Now I like it. Every once in awhile I get a bite that tastes like a toilet and I start to freak out. I have learned to keep going because kimchi is actually very good.

Chicken Wings: Korean fried chicken has made quite large impact on the food scene the past couple of years. In some instances they make the best fried chicken out. This was the best dish we had on this night. I also love the shredded cabbage salad.

Fried Shrimp: This dish is basically crab rangoon with shrimp. There was a little cream cheese in this fried pocket. Not enough in my opinion. Also the sauce can’t be absorbed by the shrimp or the fried shell so it’s basically pointless. I recommend sticking to crab rangoon.
