Sugar Fish by Sushi Nozawa:
Los Angeles loves sushi. This is place where Nobu Matsuhisa started his empire and everyone will tell you the best sushi is found in strip malls. Since arriving people have been recommending “Nozawa in the valley”. I didn’t make it to “the valley” but I did get to try the newest Nozawa outpost, Sugar Fish by Chef Nozawa, in Brentwood.
Chef Nozawa is known for being a dictator. He doesn’t allow people to use cell phones in his restaurant, no California rolls, and your best bet is to let him decide what to eat for you. The omakase concept has been gentrified for the Brentwood audience at Sugar Fish in the form of “Trust Me”. You can see the ingredients and explanations of the “Trust Me” in the pictures above.
The fish was incredibly fresh and and after eating at Sugar Fish I trust Nozawa. My problem with Sugar Fish is that they have made a Brentwood version of a sushi restaurant. It’s safe. The excitement of an omakase is never knowing what the chef might serve you. It’s meal for risk takers. At Sugar Fish the excitement is gone, which makes sense for a Brentwood crowd, because they are not the type to ever take a risk. I have more sushi to try in this city, but I can confirm once is enough for Sugar Fish.
