I have been seeing the Van Leeuwen truck all over the city recently so while walking alone on Saturday down Greene Street I decided to check it out. I was looking for a coffee and though I didn’t know what the truck specialized in I could see the espresso machine from some distance. Van Leeuwen’s specialty is what they call “artisanal” ice cream. The hand drawn photo’s of the main ingredient for each flavor felt very artisanal. I was not in the mood for ice cream but I did notice they had a hot fudge sundae for seven dollars. The sundae was topped with a sour cherry so I am sure the fudge and everything else was on point though I must say seven dollars for a sundae that you then have to walk around to eat with seems steep. I tried to order a drip coffee with a shot of espresso but they don’t do drip coffee even though it was listed on the menu. I had to settle for an Americano with an extra shot of espresso. It was good and if you look at the picture the head was crazy looking. The best coffee I have had recently was at Cafe Colombe and this truck will not be knocking Colombe off it’s top spot anytime soon. One thing I am noticing with all of these “foodie” food trucks popping up is they all seem to be staffed with very hip looking people in their late 20’s to early 30’s. It must be refreshing to work in the food service industry and have the option to open a food truck and showcase your craft years earlier than you would have because you could not afford to open up an actual restaurant. I wonder who the first food truck person to become a restauranteur will be. New York will eat that story up.
