Stopped by the Ace Hotel on Saturday night. Pretty standard Ace Hotel stuff but with the obvious New York twist. It seems against the Ace Hotel’s ethos to stock a regular beer or regular anything for that matter so I ordered the weirdest sounding non foreign beer, Pork Slap Ale. I didn’t think there was going to be pork in the beer and I don’t want try pork flavored beer but pork anything is a good substitute for my mexican cravings. It was an interesting flavor that felt most appropriate for the fall. I say this because it was like drinking a can of pumpkin pie beer.
I love pumpkin pie and when Starbucks introduced the pumpkin spice lattes some years ago it happened to be during my fat kid stage as well as my Mom’s Starbuck obsession stage and I went hog wild for them. Things got even better in the pumpkin arena when Noah’s Bagels by my house rolled out their pumpkin flavored shmear. Imagine every fall I was consuming a pumpkin spice latte and pumpkin shmear bagel every day. America the great.
Back to the beer. It was sweet which I never like in a beer. The combination of pumpkin pie flavor and sweetness made it more like a soda than a beer. I get why the Ace Hotel would be attracted to this “craftsman” product at a low price point but I think it misses the mark.
