Cafe Du Monde:
We took a break from filming for a quick trip to New Orleans. It was my first time there and being a fan of Cajun food I was beyond thrilled. New Orleans has always felt like a big place to me. From Cash Money to No Limit to Katrina to Cajun food to highest murder rates to Bourbon Street I have always been curious about the city. I would venture to say the city has as many if not more popular cultural reference points than New York or Los Angeles.
Sam and Gia were my tour guides and they made it a point to hit Cafe Du Monde first thing in the morning. New Orleans and Cafe Du Monde are known for the beignet, but I was more excited for the chicory coffee.
The first thing I noticed besides the long lines and mountains of powdered sugar was the Vietnamese waitstaff. France has been involved with Vietnam since the 1600’s so it would make sense that New Orleans had sizable Vietnamese population. For whatever reason Cafe Du Monde was the only place I saw Vietnamese people.
The beignets are great. How can you not like fried dough submerged in powdered sugar with an extra heap of powdered sugar on top. I have been enjoying Blue Bottle’s chicory iced coffee for the past couple of years so a cup at Cafe Du Monde was a no-brainer. It was so good in fact I had three that day.
Cafe Du Monde is a New Orleans institution. You have to go if you are in town. The smart move is to scour the outdoor dining room for an empty table and pounce on it. That way you don’t have to wait in the half a mile long line.
