Little Gaza - Papa Hassan's Grill - Anaheim, CA
I found myself heading to Little Gaza in Anaheim one Saturday afternoon to pick up a thawb for the first day of filming for Art With Edward. I always thought that because people in the movie industry made such ridiculous demands you could find anything a person could ever ask for within Los Angeles county. The thawb proved my thought wrong.
Of course I wasn’t upset to be making...

Art With Edward - Coming Soon.....
I have had the good fortune of working on a new show with world renowned art critic Edward Goldblum. Behind the scenes he’s a real curmudgeon, but he’s magical in front of the camera.

Alvarado Taco's - Los Angeles, CA
On this night there were four taco trucks/stands on Alvarado in Echo Park. The best one for tacos was in the Rite Aid parking lot north of Taco Zone. It is no longer there.

Muscle Beach (Hot Dog On A Stick) - Glendale, CA
Somewhere in the recent past Hot Dog On A Stick merged into Muscle Beach. I wanted to think that was troubling, but I never really supported Hot Dog On A Stick in the first place. I used to think it would be the worst thing in the world to wear a Hot Dog On A Stick uniform and slang corn dogs and lemonade. When I walked by Muscle Beach that thought creeped into my head, but then I realized I was...

Mariscos Chente - Los Angeles, CA
I took Michael straight from the airport to Mariscos Chente. It was pouring rain and the harsh interior of the restaurant didn’t make the day any more pleasant. We had our pick of tables, but there is really no best seat in the house at this place. It feels like a transient kitchen. Their are 12 lights on the ceiling, but only three of them are on. Both times I have been I have to ask...

7 Eleven Buffalo Chicken Roller
7 Eleven should have taken a page from the Russian’s cookbook, and bored out the center of their Buffalo Chicken Roller, and filled it with blue cheese. A Buffalo style chicken Kiev would have had me putting down two or three of these a week. Instead of this photo of me at the Buffalo Chicken Roller’s funeral.

Aladin Market Little Bangladesh Los Angeles, CA
Quite frequently I get the urge to travel. 95% of the time I go to LAX it is to pick up or drop somebody off. Every time I pass the International terminal I think about pulling a Lawrence Taylor. Park the car at the curb, get on the plane, and deal with the mess when you get back. Like clockwork my passenger shouts out their terminal is approaching. I pull up to the curb, hug them goodbye,...

Cafe Habana Malibu, CA
One of the best signs of the seasons changing in New York was eating dinner outside at Cafe Habana To Go with Aaron, Heron, Tyler, David and whomever else was down for the ride. Dinner on their outdoor patio ran you around 10 dollars for a sandwich (the pork, and avocado and cheese were my favorites) and a split order of corn. On special occasions we would get a Jarritos. It was one of...

Miles Cooks A Masterpiece
This post is long overdue:
Shane invited Nat and I to dinner at his friend Miles house. Miles works at Animal and Son Of A Gun, and in his off time likes to cook four course meals for his coworkers’s. I was very excited to be a part of this meal. I’ve never had a four course meal from an aspiring chef who was testing out his skills for an audience of super tough...

Nobu Malibu, California
In 2001 Nobu was a mythical place I heard about in rap songs. It was the paramount Japanese restaurant. In 2005 I went there for the first time. My boss made a dinner with him at Nobu seem as the ultimate reward for working 60 hours a week at 20 grand a year. The first time I went I got into it with a well known publicist who had a car crashing problem. I felt very uncomfortable the...

Kate Mantilini Beverly Hills, California
My next stop with Zack and Sophie was to try the pancakes at Kate Mantilini in Beverly Hills. Their pancakes are somewhere between a fluffy flapjack and a crepe. I don’t think I have seen a pancake like this anywhere. With pancakes you run the risk of feeling like a ten pound lead ball has been deposited in your stomach once you standup from the table. This hybrid pancake solves...

Uncle Darrow's Venice, California
I have known Zack for about five years and for that entire time he has insisted I try Uncle Darrow’s gumbo in Venice. For almost three of those five years neither of us lived in Los Angeles. A couple of weeks ago I finally got the chance to try this gumbo with Zack and Sophie.
Uncle Darrow’s is located in a stuccoed strip mall in Venice. I have grown to appreciate the...

El Parian Los Angeles, CA
El Parian is famous in Los Angeles for their birria. Birria is stewed goat. Alex and I checked out some birria tacos for lunch the other day and I decided I don’t like birria. It’s too gamey for me. A couple of bites almost put me over the edge so I had to stop eating my birria taco halfway through. I don’t see any reason for birria to fit into my current Mexican meat...

Beverly Soon Tofu Los Angeles, CA
Max Martin took me to Beverly Soon Tofu to try the their tofu stew or soondubu jigae. It’s a bubbling cauldron of broth, soft tofu, meat/seafood, and a raw egg cracked on top.
Finishing the bowl is a feat of endurance. You start sweating before your first bite, don’t stop until you exit the restaurant, and get cooled by the summer breeze. It’s the perfect thing to eat...

Jitlada Los Angeles, CA
Rick likes eating out. If my memory serves me correct in New York he likes to eat at Takahachi, Barrio Chino, and maybe Marlow and Sons. He also likes the Sunrise Market in Soho for lunch. I took him to Little Dom’s and he loved it, but I thought he should try a place more unique to Los Angeles for what turned out to be his final meal. Jitlada and its Southern Thai specialties menu was...

Berlin Currywurst Los Angeles, CA
In Berlin, Currywurst, is street food of the lowest order. It’s how poor artists from America living on American unemployment feed themselves. (Someone told me the other day a majority of their American friends in Berlin did this.)
There is something about spending over 10 dollars for a hot dog smothered in curried ketchup and a side of fries at Berlin Currywurst that doesn’t sit...

Lonely and Bored: Too Short and Taco Trucks.
Last Tuesday night around 11:30 I found myself feeling lonely with nothing to do. I decided to hit the streets in search of food and friends. I found three taco trucks on 3rd street between Western and Vermont. The only friend I found was a chopped and screwed version of Too Short’s Getting It.
I ordered one carne asada taco at each truck. They were all mediocre, so I...

Papa's Place Los Angeles, CA
The burger at Papa’s Place reminded me of the burger served in many European cities throughout the 90’s and early 2000’s. Before food culture became globalized and you could still get tired of eating the local fare. Craving something familiar, but better than McDonald’s. All restaurants catering to tourists had a tough ground beef patty cooked on a griddle with a...

Rustic: Francis' Favorites Sonoma, California
As a young porker I would daydream about the menu for my wedding. Naturally, it would be an all you can eat buffet with all my favorite dishes. Think a tour of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for savory foods. Chevys Original Fajita Nachos, smoked trout from the Awahnee Grand Sunday brunch in Yosemite, my Grandma’s Corn Flake cheese potato casserole, and sweet and sour pork...

McDonald's on I5.
Nick Walker is the only person in the world who can get me to eat at McDonald’s.
McDonald’s has decided to sell 50 chicken McNuggets for 9.99. It is inappropriate. Nothing in that quantity should be that cheap.
The only thing to order at McDonald’s are Chicken Selects. They are the closest thing to free range chicken you will find at any fast food restaurant.

Gott's Roadhouse St. Helena, California
I went to Napa for 4th of July. When in Napa I always pay a visit to Gott’s Roadhouse. It’s a stellar “California” burger stand. 4th of July weekend would not be the same without it. Sam an Nick shared all the food on that tray. I came in at the end for some help with the chili fries.
